Qualitative Research Director - Retail/FMCG Insights

Job description

Are you an experienced qualitative researcher ready to take the next step in your career?
Our client—a dynamic, consumer-centric brand, insights, and research consultancy—is looking for the future head of its qualitative division. Specialists in FMCG, Retail, and shopper insights, global brands across Australia and the USA trust them to deliver insights that help them grow, move confidently, and solve problems.
All projects are bespoke, focusing on brand, product, and retail research, shaping brand strategy, NPD, communications testing, price optimisation, visual identity, and innovation.

Qualitative Research Director
This is a unique and influential role for senior qualitative researchers who want to be part of something special and be the face of the qualitative division. With a seat at the leadership table, you’ll have influence from day one, with uncapped room for progression, the freedom to bring your ideas to the table, and a constant stream of interesting, varied, and ad-hoc qual and mixed-method projects.

Your responsibilities:
  • Lead projects from pitch through to presentation, with a focus on proposal writing, insight delivery, and presentation.
  • Deepen relationships with existing and new FMCG/retail clients.
  • Mentor, inspire, and elevate junior team members.
  • Strategic planning, new business development, and elevating the agency's qual capabilities, tools, and ways of working with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Jump on the tools facilitating groups, in-depths, shop-a-longs, ethnography, co-creation sessions, and workshops.
This agency's values are inclusivity, balance, and collaboration—deeply integrated into its culture and working ethos. People who work here tell us they feel heard, empowered, and supported at all levels.
With a hybrid working model, 5+ weeks of annual leave, bonuses, and a four-day working week (with full pay!), they’ve created a progressive environment where you can thrive professionally and personally.

What we’re looking for:
  • Proven senior-level experience in qualitative research or brand strategy.
  • A hands-on qual practitioner.
  • FMCG & CPG/retail expertise is a significant advantage.
  • Exceptional storytelling, presentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • A track record of writing and winning proposals.
  • Strong leadership skills, with experience mentoring junior researchers.
  • Commercial acumen and the ability to think strategically.
Finally, and most importantly, you’ll have high levels of self-awareness, the gravitas of a senior leader, the genuine desire to grow a team, and the energy to make it happen!
